swimming pool with yard debris floating in it from a hurricane

Prime hurricane season is now!

While hurricane season runs from June 1st through November 30th, the most active time for hurricanes in Florida is from mid-August through the end of October. In fact, 90% of hurricanes occur after August 1st and September 10th is the peak day of hurricane season, statistically.

Hurricanes can wreak havoc on swimming pools! Swim ‘N Fun wants you to be prepared before a storm hits.

Prepare your pool by doing the following:

•Put away loose items such as patio tables, patio chairs, pool toys, grills, and patio umbrellas. Do not store these items in the pool as the pool chemicals could damage them or the items could leave rust stains after removal.
•Turn off the power to the pool. If there is a chance of flooding, wrap exposed electrical equipment in a waterproof cover and make sure it is tied tightly. You can also place sandbags near the equipment to help protect it from the elements.
•If you have a pool cover, leave it off.
•Balance pool chemicals (shock for extra boost).
•Don’t drain the pool. Draining the pool can cause the pool to pop out of the ground.
•Trim tree branches and shrubs that are near the pool. Clean up any debris that could end up in the pool.

How to clean up after the hurricane:

•Clean pool of all debris such as leaves, limbs, and mulch.
•Check the electrical equipment to your pool to make sure that it hasn’t been damaged.
•Turn power back on to re-start pump and filter.
•Make sure to re-set your pump times and circuit breakers if you had lost power during the storm.
•Brush and vacuum the pool to help remove any grime.
•Re-check the pool chemicals. If you are a current pool cleaning customer, our technicians will check your pool chemicals to make sure the water is balanced. Our 10-point water test checks for pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, free available chorine, total available chlorine, Cyanuric acid, total dissolved solids, metals, phosphates, and salt.
•Continue to monitor your pool to make sure that everything is working properly.
