rain water hitting swimming pool

Swimming pools offer a refreshing escape from the Florida summer heat and humidity. Many pool owners rely on the clarity of the water as a primary indicator of cleanliness and safety. However, at Swim N Fun, we want to emphasize that clear water does not always equate to safe water. Understanding the potential hidden dangers in an even seemingly pristine pool and knowing how to address them is crucial for maintaining a safe swimming environment.

The Deceptive Nature of Clear Water
Crystal-clear water can mask a multitude of issues that are not immediately visible to the naked eye. Here are some common hidden dangers:

  1. Chemical Imbalance: Even if the water looks clear, the chemical levels might be off. The pH, chlorine, and alkalinity need to be balanced to ensure the water is safe. Imbalances can lead to skin irritation, eye discomfort, and can create an environment where harmful bacteria thrive.
  2. Microbial Contaminants: Bacteria and viruses are microscopic and can be present even in very clear water. Contaminants like E. coli, Cryptosporidium, and Giardia can cause severe gastrointestinal issues and other health problems.
  3. Algae and Other Organic Matter: Algae can start growing in the pool without immediately clouding the water. Some types of algae are invisible in their early stages but can still pose a risk to swimmers’ health and cause slippery surfaces.
  4. Disinfectant Byproducts: When chlorine reacts with organic matter, it creates disinfection byproducts (DBPs), such as chloramines. These can cause respiratory issues and other health concerns, even if the water remains clear.
  5. Heavy Metals and Toxins: Metals like copper and iron can be dissolved in the water without affecting its clarity. Long-term exposure to these metals can lead to health issues and stain pool surfaces.

Ensuring Safe Pool Water
Maintaining clear and safe pool water requires a multifaceted approach. We are always happy to help you determine exactly what your pool needs and when. In general, there are a few things you do to keep your pool safe and healthy for swimmers of all ages. You may want to keep the following seven step checklist on hand:

  1. Regular Testing and Monitoring:
o Test your pool water at least twice a week using a reliable test kit. This will help you keep track of the pH, chlorine, alkalinity, and calcium hardness levels.
o Keep a record of the results to identify any trends or recurring issues.
  2. Balanced Chemical Levels:
o Maintain a pH level between 7.2 and 7.6 to ensure comfort and effective sanitization.
o Chlorine levels should be kept between 1.0 and 3.0 parts per million (ppm) to kill harmful microorganisms.
o Use stabilizers to protect chlorine from the sun’s UV rays, ensuring it remains effective longer.
  3. Routine Cleaning and Maintenance:
o Skim the pool surface daily to remove debris.
o Consider adding a few tennis balls if the surface of the water looks oily from sunscreen or body oils.
o Vacuum the pool floor regularly and brush the walls to prevent algae buildup.
o Clean and backwash the filter system as needed to ensure optimal performance.
  4. Shock Treatment:
o Shock your pool weekly or after heavy use to eliminate contaminants and restore water clarity.
o Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the correct amount of shock treatment based on your pool’s size.
  5. Algaecide Application:
o Use algaecides as a preventive measure, especially in warmer months when algae growth is more likely.
o Follow a regular algaecide treatment schedule to keep your pool algae-free.
  6. Addressing Heavy Metals:
o Use sequestrants to bind metals and prevent staining and discoloration.
o Test for metal levels if you notice any unusual staining or if you use well water to fill your pool.
  7. Professional Inspections and Services:
o Schedule regular professional inspections from Swim N Fun to identify and address potential issues that may not be apparent to the average pool owner.
o At Swim N Fun, we offer comprehensive pool inspection and maintenance services to ensure your pool remains a safe and enjoyable environment.

When Pool Water Doesn’t Look Normal
While maintaining clear water is essential, there are times when the water might not look or smell right. If you notice any unusual changes in your pool water—such as cloudiness, discoloration, a strong chlorine odor, or slimy surfaces—don’t just jump in. These signs can indicate chemical imbalances, contamination, or other underlying issues that could pose health risks.

Before attempting to address these problems on your own, call Swim N Fun first. Our team of experienced professionals is equipped to diagnose and resolve any pool-related issues, ensuring that your pool water is safe and crystal clear.

Remember, clear water is not a guarantee of safety. Regular maintenance, proper chemical balance, and professional inspections are key to a healthy swimming environment. Trust Swim N Fun to help you keep your pool in top condition, so you can swim with peace of mind.

baby learning swim lessons

Backyard swimming pools are what most kids live in all summer long, but dangers can lurk! One way to make your pool safer is to install a pool safety net.

A pool safety net is a protective barrier designed to prevent accidental drownings and enhance safety around swimming pools. Made from high-strength, UV-stabilized polyethylene or polypropylene, these nets are engineered to withstand significant weight and resist degradation from sun exposure. A pool safety net covers the pool’s surface, preventing children, pets, or anyone from falling into the water when the pool is not in use. Pool nets can significantly reduce the risk of drowning accidents.

The net is typically installed with a tensioning system that ensures it remains taut and secure over the pool. This system often includes anchors that are drilled into the pool deck and a central tensioning device that allows for easy tightening and loosening of the net. In general, they are quick and easy to install, requiring minimal hardware and no permanent alterations to the pool or surrounding area. The net’s mesh size is carefully chosen to be small enough to prevent a child’s head from fitting through, yet large enough to avoid being cumbersome for adults to handle.

Additionally, pool nets are low maintenance, requiring only occasional cleaning and inspection to ensure optimal performance. They are designed to withstand Florida’s harsh climate, including intense sunlight, humidity, and occasional storms. Their durable construction ensures year-round protection, providing a reliable barrier against accidents and unauthorized access.

One of the key advantages of a pool safety net over other safety measures, such as fences or covers, is its unobtrusive and does not obstruct the view of the pool. Pool safety nets are relatively quick to install and remove, offering convenience and safety for pool owners.

Pool safety nets are a crucial component of a comprehensive pool safety strategy. They provide peace of mind for homeowners by significantly reducing the risk of drowning incidents, which are a leading cause of accidental death in young children. It is essential for pool owners to prioritize safety education and awareness. This includes teaching children how to swim from an early age, establishing clear rules and guidelines for pool use, and ensuring that adults and caregivers are trained in CPR and water rescue techniques.

By combining physical barriers with vigilant supervision and swimming education, pool safety nets help ensure that pool areas remain safe environments for enjoyment and recreation.

Many communities in Florida offer resources and initiatives aimed at promoting pool safety awareness and providing support to families. This includes free or subsidized swimming lessons, water safety workshops, and access to discounted or subsidized pool safety equipment, such as safety nets and alarms.

2024 Pool Trends

woman automating her pool temperature using her cell phone

As the weather warms up and Central Florida begins planning for another pool season, there are several innovations and trends you may want to consider adding this year. Like many other areas of our home from lightbulbs to locks, swimming pools are becoming more and more efficient by using smart technology. Swim ‘N Fun is embracing the latest in these trends to elevate your pool experience that can help you in controlling your pool temperature, lighting, and filtration system with a tap on your smartphone. Inground pools can now integrate seamlessly with smart home systems, offering unparalleled convenience and customization for Central Florida pool enthusiasts.

Sustainability is at the forefront of the 2024 pool trends. Eco-friendly options, including energy-efficient pool pumps, state of the art pool heaters, and water-saving filtration systems are just a few of the trends we are seeing implemented across the industry with significantly higher adoption rates. We can help you embrace a greener approach to pool ownership without compromising on the crystal-clear waters and the joy of a refreshing swim.

Another trend we are seeing adopted in more and more home pools is customizable LED lighting options. Many pools now feature advanced LED systems that allow you to set the mood with an array of colors and lighting patterns. Whether it’s a vibrant pool party or a tranquil evening swim, the ambiance is yours to control often from your smart phone. Automation is taking over and allowing pool owners to set their lighting remotely so when they come home their backyard oasis is ready for enjoyment!

Although our team at Swim ‘N Fun does not install landscaping, rock formations, built-in water cannons and bubblers or fountains, these are all unique improvements pool owners are adding to their pools. If you’d like to go a step further in water and light, you can also add the element of fire to your pool. These customizable designs that integrate fire bowls, torches, or fire pits alongside cascading water elements add much more ambiance to your backyard pool. This harmonious blend creates a captivating visual spectacle and transforms your poolside space into a luxurious retreat. These enhancements mentioned all improve the ambiance of your backyard pool, but if you don’t maintain your pool with weekly pool cleaning your oasis can quickly be less than inviting no matter how much landscape you have added, the lighting or bubblers you have enhanced it with. Swim ‘N Fun can certainly help you with weekly pool cleaning to keep your pool from going green.

We’ve said it before and the trend of letting go of traditional chlorine pools and embracing a saltwater pool is here to stay. Advanced saltwater pool systems offer a more natural and skin-friendly swimming experience. Enjoy the benefits of reduced chemical usage and a softer feel against your skin, making every swim a refreshing and rejuvenating experience. We can help you decide which system is right for you.

Other trends in pools are the standard screen enclosures, Floridians are no strangers to enclosed pool systems and the new trends for 2024 do not disappoint. Stylish and functional pool enclosures that protect against debris, insects, and the afternoon rain shower helping you extend your pool season and make the most of your outdoor oasis. Swim ‘N Fun does not install or repair pool enclosures, but they can help to protect the floor of your pool from leaf and debris stains.

With a commitment to innovation, sustainability, and creating unparalleled aquatic experiences, the 2024 pool innovations and trends redefine what it means to have a pool in your backyard.

Enhancing your pool with style and trends is what most homeowners enjoy, however, they often forget to protect their investment with weekly pool cleaning. We find some homeowners don’t call us right away when they notice a pool issue such as lack of pressure with their pump, leaking valves or malfunctioning pool equipment. Our office is open Monday through Friday should you have pool issues and need assistance.

person automating their pool from their smart phone

Owning a swimming pool can bring joy and relaxation, but it also comes with headaches and responsibilities, especially when it comes to managing your energy consumption. Pool automation offers more than convenience and control, it can make your pool more energy efficient and save you money in the long run

Preventing Winter Heat Waste
One common source of energy waste in traditional pool heating systems is the tendency to maintain pool water at a comfortable temperature even when the pool is not in use. During the chilly winter months when you won’t be swimming anyway keeping your pool at the perfect temperature can lead to substantial heat and energy loss.

Pool automation can make a big difference in how and when your pool is ready for you to use. Automated systems can detect the pool’s usage patterns and adjust the heating accordingly. When the pool is not in use, the automation system can either lower the water temperature or switch off the heating system entirely, preventing unnecessary heat and energy waste. This intelligent management ensures that energy is used only when required, reducing energy bills, and minimizing environmental impact.

Remote Temperature Control
Beyond automating based solely on use, an additional feature of pool automation is the ability to remotely control your pool’s temperature. If you’re planning a pool party or an evening swim, you likely want the water to be your preferred temperature when you jump in. With pool automation, you can set the desired temperature from your smartphone or tablet, giving your pool the right amount of time to be at the temperature you want.

This remote temperature control is not just about convenience, it can also be an energy-saving feature. Instead of keeping your pool heated continuously, you can set the temperature just before use. This on-demand approach minimizes energy consumption and, subsequently, energy costs. This enhancement to your pool experience also reduces your carbon footprint.

Optimized Filtration and Cleaning Schedules
Proper filtration and cleaning are essential for maintaining a sparkling and healthy pool. (link to prior posts on keeping your pool clean) However, running the pool filter and vacuum cleaner 24/7 can be a considerable drain on energy resources. Automation can provide optimized schedules for these tasks.

Pool automation systems can be programmed to run the filter and vacuum cleaner during specific times when community or personal energy demand is lower, such as during off-peak hours. Additionally, automation can adapt to changing conditions, such as heavy leaf fall, and adjust the cleaning schedule accordingly, to maintain efficient use of energy while keeping your pool pristine.

Energy-Efficient Pump Operation
The pool pump is a critical component for circulation and filtration, but it can also be one of the largest energy consumers in a pool system. Traditional pumps often run at a constant speed, regardless of the actual circulation needs. Pool automation introduces variable-speed pumps and intelligent control.

Variable-speed pumps can adjust speed to match the pool’s requirements, reducing energy consumption during periods of lower demand. Automation systems can further optimize pump operation by syncing it with filtration, heating, and cleaning schedules. This level of coordination ensures that the pump runs efficiently, reducing energy costs while maintaining water quality.

The Bottom Line: Savings and Sustainability
Pool automation is more than a luxury, it can be a smart investment that pays dividends in energy savings and sustainability. By preventing winter heat waste, enabling remote temperature control, optimizing filtration and cleaning schedules, and promoting efficient pump operation, automation systems significantly reduce the energy footprint of your pool.

The benefits go beyond cost savings. With pool automation, you’re not only enjoying a more energy-efficient pool but also contributing to a greener future. As technology continues to advance, pool automation is becoming an essential tool for pool owners who want to maximize enjoyment while minimizing energy consumption. Automation gives pool owners a smarter and more sustainable way of maintaining their investment.

Ultimately, the best time to install an automated pool or hot tub system depends on your individual needs and circumstances. Call us at 407-699-1952 for a personalized recommendation.

woman in swimming pool on a raft with her dog

YES! It very well could!

Some dogs love the water and keeping them out is difficult, other dogs avoid it completely. If you’re a pool owner with a water loving dog as part of your family, you may still want to keep your dog out of the pool to avoid possible extensive pool problems.

Dogs affect pool chemical balance
Pool chemicals can irritate both people and canine skin. Beyond irritated skin, even well-balanced pool chemicals can irritate your dog’s nose and eyes. You pool water is also likely to look dirty, possibly be contaminated with E. coli from the fecal matter on their skin and fur. The phosphates, nitrates, and bacteria naturally on dog skin can significantly disrupt the pH and the chemical balance of your pool water. You will have to test it and shock it more often to keep the chemicals in balance. Quick reminder of what the levels should be:

• pH should always stay between 7.2 and 7.8 ideally, 7.4 and 7.6. An off-balance pH may lead to calcium buildup which puts undue stress on your liner and can be uncomfortable to swim next to.
• Chlorine should be between 1.0 and 4.0 parts per million (ppm), too much makes your pool look green. Too little means your pool is a good home for bacteria and algae.

Dogs of any size can cause your water level to drop
There’s a saying one dog is equal to several additional people in the pool at the same time so all that splashing could cause your water level to drop, which in turn could create problems in the pool pump and can cause the pump to run dry or burn up. Just like you would check the pool water level after a party, check the pool water level after a dog, even a small dog, has been in your pool.

If you have a pool liner, a dog’s toenails put your pool liner at risk for punctures
Most in ground pools in Florida do not have a liner, however, there is a coating on your in ground pool that can be damaged by a dog’s toe nails scratching the surface of it. If you do have a liner, it is at risk of a puncture or tear when a dog is in the pool. Even if the dog’s feet don’t touch the bottom of the pool, when a dog climbs in and out of the pool, they will look for traction. Also, water increases a dog’s weight increases with the water and an accidental sharp toenail could easily puncture the liner as they climb out and scratch at the sides.

Filters are more easily clogged when a dog enters the pool
Dog hair, debris can also clog your filter. Some pool owners find the dog hair manageable with more skimming and vacuuming but you risk clogging equipment. If a dog has been in your pool, even just for a few moments, be sure to check and empty both the pool skimmer basket (by the pool) and the pump basket (inside the pump) as soon as possible.

If you’ve had a dog in your pool, get checked out by the pros
While you can do a lot on your own to mitigate the impact of a dog swimming in your pool on your own, you might need professional help. In fact, we recommend you have your pool serviced more often if you have dogs swimming with you. You may be good at checking your pool equipment such as filters, pumps, and heating systems but we can assess all of those for major and minor issues.

algae in a swimming pool

Summer is prime pool weather! Between the kids being out of school, parties, celebrations, barbecues, and those long summer days, your pool is being enjoyed often. While it is wonderful to host gatherings, to let the kids cool off, or to just relax in the pool after a hard day of work, it can be time consuming to keep your pool sparkling blue. Add in the daily afternoon rain showers and the scorching heat and you could have a recipe for a chemically unbalanced and green pool.

Various factors can contribute to an unhealthy pool. Factors such as:
• Rain – Daily Florida rainstorms can upset the chemistry of the swimming pool. Rainwater is acidic and reduces the pH levels in a pool. This in turn could result in the chlorine and alkalinity levels going low. This could cause cloudy water, calcium buildup, and increase bacteria growth. High water levels could also cover the skimmer opening which means that debris won’t be able to get into the skimmer and will stay in the pool.

• Sun – On the flip side, scorching temperatures can lower the level of water in the pool. Low water levels could cause damage to your pool equipment such as burning out your pool pump motor. Low water levels could also lead to inadequate water circulation. The sun can also breakdown chlorine levels. This could cause an increase in bacteria in the pool.

• Algae – Algae can build up and multiply quickly in the summer. The summer rains and the sun soaking up all of the chemicals in the pool is a perfect recipe to form algae. Keeping the chemicals balanced in your swimming pool helps prevent algae from forming.

• Travel – Your summer vacation could leave your pool in a lurch. While you are gone enjoying your down time, your pool is being neglected. Florida weather can be brutal in the summer. This means that your pool needs to be regularly maintained in order to keep the chemicals at a consistent level.
As you can see, maintaining a pool can be time consuming and hard work. Especially with the challenges that Florida summers provide. Isn’t it time for you to relax and leave the hard work to us? Swim ‘N Fun offers weekly pool maintenance to keep your pool the perfect oasis.

When it comes to landscaping around your Florida pool, it’s important to choose trees that
won’t cause excessive debris, invasive root systems, or pose any danger to your pool structure.
There are several tree species you may want to avoid planting near your Florida pool, or trim
back from near your pool if they are already in your yard.

The top trees to avoid are:

  1. Oak Trees: While oak trees are majestic and provide ample shade, their shedding leaves,
acorns, and pollen can create a mess in your pool. Additionally, their extensive root
systems can be aggressive and invasive, potentially damaging pool infrastructure.
  2. Pine Trees: Pine trees are common in Florida and offer beautiful foliage. However, their
needles can easily clog pool filters, and the sticky sap they produce can be difficult to
remove from pool surfaces. Furthermore, their shallow root systems may interfere with
    underground plumbing.
  3. Eucalyptus Trees: Eucalyptus trees are known for their rapid growth and aromatic
leaves. However, their leaves can create a significant debris problem in pools.
Moreover, the volatile oils in their leaves can affect water chemistry and increase the
    maintenance required for your pool.
  4. Palm Trees with Large Fruits: While palm trees are synonymous with tropical
landscapes, some varieties produce large fruits that can drop into the pool, creating a
hassle to clean. Coconuts and large seeds can cause damage if they fall from a
    significant height.
  5. Sweetgum Trees: Sweetgum trees are attractive, especially during the fall when their
leaves turn vibrant colors. However, they produce spiky, round seed pods called
“gumballs” that can be a nuisance in the pool, making cleaning a tedious task.
  6. Rubber Trees: Rubber trees have gained popularity as houseplants but should be
avoided near pools. These trees shed leaves and produce a sticky sap that can be
difficult to remove from pool surfaces. Additionally, their invasive root system can
    damage underground structures.
  7. Weeping Willow Trees: Although weeping willow trees create a beautiful, cascading
canopy, they have aggressive roots that can damage pool foundations, underground
pipes, and plumbing. Their constant shedding of branches, leaves, and twigs can also
    burden your pool maintenance routine.
  8. Ficus Trees: Ficus trees, including the popular Ficus benjamina, have invasive roots that
can cause significant damage to pool structures. Their leaves shed throughout the year,
creating a constant need for cleaning. Moreover, their sticky sap can be challenging to
    remove.
  9. Jacaranda Trees: Jacaranda trees feature stunning purple blooms that add aesthetic
appeal to any landscape. However, their flowers can fall into the pool, creating debris.
Additionally, their extensive root systems can be invasive and potentially cause damage
    to pool structures.
  10. Bamboo: While bamboo can create an exotic and tranquil atmosphere, its rapid growth
and aggressive root system make it unsuitable for poolside planting. The dense foliage
can cause excessive debris, and the running root system can infiltrate pool plumbing
    and crack foundations.

When choosing trees for your Florida pool area, consider low-maintenance options with non-
invasive root systems, minimal shedding, and a smaller stature. Consulting with a local
horticulturist or landscape professional can provide valuable insights into the best tree species
for your specific pool and landscape requirements.

Keeping pool maintained during the winter by cleaning debris out with a net.

How can a pool service lend a hand when you are on vacation for an extended period of time? It’s never fun to come home to a green pool with water bugs swarming under water. Hiring a pool service can be a life saver EXPECIALLY while you’re out of town! What would a pool service offer while you are away so you don’t come home to a green pond in your backyard oasis?

  1. Balance the water chemistry: Our pool technicians will ensure that your pool’s water chemistry is properly balanced each week. We test the water’s pH, alkalinity, and chlorine levels, and adjust them as necessary to maintain a healthy balance. Balanced water chemistry helps prevent algae growth and other water-related issues.
  2. Shock the pool: If this is needed our technicians may consider shocking your pool with a chlorine-based shock treatment if the algae growth is plentiful. This helps to eliminate any organic contaminants and bacteria in the water, keeping it clean during your absence.
  3. Clean the pool: Our technicians will thoroughly clean the pool each week by removing any debris, such as leaves, twigs, or insects. Skimming the surface of any pool is a weekly task, vacuuming regularly too, and possibly brushing the walls may also be required to keep the pool clean. A clean pool reduces the chances of algae growth and helps maintain water clarity.
  4. Maintain water level: Our technicians will ensure that the water level in your pool is at the appropriate level. If it’s too low, the pool equipment might not function properly, and if it’s too high, there’s a risk of flooding. Monitoring water level is also key to a healthy pool.

What can you do while your away to ensure your pool is secure?

  1. Secure the pool area: Make sure your pool area is properly secured to prevent any unauthorized access while you’re away. Lock gates and ensure that fences are in good condition. This helps to ensure the safety of your pool and prevents any potential accidents.
  2. Set pool equipment timers: If you have automated pool equipment, such as pumps, filters, or chlorinators, set them to run for the appropriate duration during your absence. This helps to circulate and filter the water, maintaining its quality.
  3. Enlist the help of a reliable neighbor or friend: In Florida we tend to have frequent summer thunder and lightning storms. These can cause some minor flooding or worse case and electrical fire if lightning strikes your home. Ask a trusted neighbor or friend to keep an eye on your pool while you’re away. Request them to check the pool area regularly, ensure the equipment is functioning, and report any issues to you. Leave your neighbor our phone number so if they notice any issues they can give us a call for service.
  4. Notify us: Give us a call and inform us about your absence so our technicians will be aware in case there are issues when they arrive for weekly maintenance.

Our team at Swim ‘N Fun regularly services pools for clients on vacation all summer long to make sure everything is functioning properly and in good condition so our customers can come home to a pool ready for swimming.

We offer a variety of services to help ensure that your pool is safe and well-maintained, including pool cleaning, equipment repair, and maintenance services.

person cleaning a pool

When looking for a pool service contractor, here are some things to keep in mind.

Pool owners should always hire a reputable pool service contractor with experience working on your type of pool. They should also ask for references and read reviews online before choosing to hire a company and be prepared to evaluate after the first few services.

Ask about their experience.
A good pool service contractor will have extensive experience working with your type of pool. Some pool companies focus only on inground pools, some focus solely on leak detection and maintenance, others like Swim N Fun provide comprehensive pool maintenance. Figure out what you are looking for in a pool service company and then match your needs with a reputable company.

Look at their credentials.
Once you’ve narrowed down your search to a few companies, the very next item on your list, even before checking reviews, should be to make sure they have the proper certification and licenses. A good pool service company has extensive training for their technicians and has the proper coverage to handle the chemicals. In Florida, this is a Certified Pool/Spa Contractor license from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. A licensed person or company has completed the required education, experience, insurance and qualifications to obtain a license and has passed a two-part competency test. Before hiring any pool service contractor, check the status of their licensure at MyFloridaLicense.com.

Review their insurance coverage.
Pool service contractors and pool service companies should have insurance that cover people, property and operations. You can learn more about what kind of insurance they carry by asking them and you can also request a copy of their insurance coverage if they don’t offer it at your initial meeting or have it available online. It’s important to make sure they have enough coverage to protect themselves against any accidents that might occur while they are working on your property. If you hire a pool service contractor who does not offer liability insurance, you will need to purchase additional coverage through your insurance company, which may mean you could pay more money out of pocket when there is an accident.

Check out their reviews online.
Once you have verified the pool service contractor or pool service company has the required experience, licensures, and insurance coverage, now is the time to start learning more about what their customers think about their work. You can look for reviews on their social media pages, testimonials on their website, Google reviews and other locations. The best place to start is by going to your favorite search engine and typing in the name of the company and reviews. This will help you determine whether they are reputable and trustworthy. You should also ask for references, particularly if the online reviews are limited.

leaves in netting

Pool maintenance is a tedious task, especially in the fall when the leaves drop, and it seems as soon as you’ve cleaned the last leaf from your pool a gust of wind comes along and blows more into the water.

While there are ways to expedite leaf removal, it does take time either in the actual removal or in the setup. It is critical that you don’t let leaves stay in the pool too long because the leaves can clog up the filter and make cleaning even more difficult.

If the leaves are mostly floating on the surface, one of the best ways to remove leaves is by using a leaf net. The leaf net is an easy-to-use tool that can be used to remove leaves from the pool without getting into the water.

Leaf nets look like butterfly nets and are used to skim over the top of the water to collect the leaves. Leaf nets are good for both small and large pools and come in various sizes. As long as the leaves are floating on the water, a leaf net will catch all of the leaves in one go, so you don’t have to spend time picking them out individually.

You can also use a leaf rake, which is a skimmer with a leaf net attached. Because a leaf rake doesn’t involve you manually removing the leaves, it takes a bit longer but less of your time.

If you have leaves sitting on the bottom of the pool, the best way to remove them is with a pool vacuum or a leaf gulper. The leaf gulper removes all of the debris from the pool floor such as leaves, pine needles, and other debris. The leaf gulper is a mesh bag that attaches to your garden hose and vacuum to create suction and bags leaves sitting on your pool floor. Many of these have bristles on the bottom to help scrub more stubborn leaves and debris.

If you have an automatic pool cleaner, you can attach a pool vacuum leaf canister to filter out the leaves automatically. By fitting this device between your cleaner and the pump system attachment you can prevent the leaves from reaching the pump and causing damage. Once you put it all together, you will just need to run the pup and regularly empty the leaf trap.
