algae in a swimming pool

Summer is in full swing, how is your pool holding up?

Is it still blue in color? Does it have tints of green yet?

Who wants to swim in a green algae infested pool? Don’t worry, Swim ‘N Fun is here to help. Read on to learn about algae, where it comes from, and how to get rid of it.

What exactly is algae?

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, “algae are plants or plantlike organisms that are chiefly aquatic usually chlorophyll-containing nonvascular organisms.” Algae produces oxygen through photosynthesis and it grows quickly. This causes an issue with your pool as it will turn your pool green and can contaminate your pool water. Algae comes from soil and plant debris and its spores can blow into your pool. Higher temperatures and those daily Central Florida summer thunderstorms can also help introduce algae into your pool. Poor water circulation, lack of balance of pool chemicals, and a dirty filter can all contribute to algae. No matter how it gets there, algae is a nuisance.

How can you get rid of algae?

Proper maintenance of your pool including balanced chemicals and vacuuming your pool can help prevent algae growth. If your pool already is showing signs of that pesky green algae, then follow these steps:
•Vacuum your pool
•Brush the walls, floor, and steps of your pool
•Test the pool water and balance the chemicals
•Shock your pool
•Add algaecide
•Run your filter
•Test the pool water again
•Make sure to clean out your pool filter

We can help fine tune your pool water and combat algae.  Our weekly pool cleaning staff can recommend what chemicals and procedures you will need to do in order to eliminate algae.
