Keeping pool maintained during the winter by cleaning debris out with a net.

The winter months are here!  Florida enjoys mild temperatures during the winter months.  However, you still need to care for your pool during this time. Keeping your pool maintained during the winter months will ensure that your pool is ready for swimmers.

Swim ‘N Fun offers these tips for keeping your pool maintained during the winter months:

  • Do NOT drain your pool.  Draining your pool could cause issues that might result in your pool popping out of the ground.
  • Keep your pool cleaned.  Skim leaves and debris, brush the sides, and vacuum your pool to help maintain cleanliness.
  • Make sure that the chemicals are balanced in your pool.  Even if no one is swimming in your pool, keeping it balanced ensures that algae won’t grow.  Plus, it will make it easier to get your pool ready for when people do want to swim.
  • Run the pump. The pump circulates the water and the chemicals throughout the pool which helps to keep the pool clean and blue. This also helps to keep algae from forming in your pool.
  • Make sure to monitor your water level.  Add water to your pool if the water level drops below the skimmers.
  • Remove any pool toys from the pool.  Store them in a dry area to help prevent mildew.

Swim ‘N Fun wants you to enjoy your pool year-round.  These tips can help keep your pool sparkling blue during the winter months. You can also check out our press release to learn about common pool maintenance mistakes and how to avoid them. If you don’t have time to maintain your pool or don’t want to deal with the hassle, we offer weekly pool maintenance. During your weekly pool maintenance, our pool techs will test your pool water, balance the chemicals, skim the pool, brush the pool walls, empty the baskets, clean or backwash filter, vacuum pool as needed, check the equipment to make sure it is running properly, and will notify you of any issues.  Our service is affordable and has no contract required. Best Pool Repairs

Want to find the best pool repair company in Central Florida?

Look no further than Swim ‘N Fun. We have been in business since 1986 and are family owned and operated. Your neighbors across Central Florida including those residing in Winter Springs, Longwood, Altamonte Springs, Lake Mary, Oviedo, Sanford, and Maitland have relied on us for their pool repairs throughout the years. We offer a wide array of pool repairs to meet your every need.

Here’s a list of common pool repair problems:
• Pool pumps
• Pool skimmers
• Pool filters
• Pool heaters
• Pool lights
• Pool chlorinators for both chlorine and salt water systems
• Pool vacuum
• Air in the pump basket

This is a sample of the variety of pool repair issues that Swim ‘N Fun can tackle and conquer.

How do you know if you need a pool pump repair?

For example, a pool pump can have many things wrong with it since it has numerous moving parts. The pool pump could have a motor problem, could be leaking, or could be clogged. You might notice that the water in the pool isn’t circulating, isn’t filtering correctly, is leaking out of the bottom of the seal plate, or that the water flow is falling. The water might look cloudy or dirty since it isn’t being filtered correctly. The pump pressure could drop or the motor could be running at a higher pitch than normal.

Pool skimmers also require attention.

Skimmers are important since they help remove debris from your pool and keep it clean. Skimmers can get clogged, leak, or need to have the lid replaced due to wear.

Pool Heaters

Pool heaters tend to give issues if they haven’t been used for a while. Pool owners typically don’t realize there is a problem with the pool heater until November when Florida temperatures drop into the 50’s and 60’s for a daily high. Wiring may be corroded, the pool heater switch may need to be replaced, the heating element may have just burned out due to long-time use. There are a whole host of problems that can arise with pool heaters. Our technicians fix pool heaters.

This is just a sample of the many types of pool repair problems that our technicians have handled. All of these issues and more can be resolved by our highly trained service technicians.

Swim ‘N Fun is a fully licensed and insured pool repair business. Looking for the best pool repair company in Seminole County, Florida? Our pool techs are ready to help! Pool repairs and malfunctions don’t always require an expensive repair.

Halloween Pool Party

pumpkins floating in a pool

Happy Halloween!

Celebrate Halloween the whole weekend!

How about a spooktacular Halloween pool party!

Swim ‘N Fun offers these ideas for a spooky good time:

•Decorate your pool with pumpkins. Either carve or decorate pumpkins and place them around your pool with glow sticks or battery- operated lights in them.

•Did you know that pumpkins float? Place undecorated pumpkins in the pool and let your guests dive in and pick out their favorite pumpkin. They can then decorate or carve their pumpkin at a decorating/carving station. Once they are done, put them back in the pool and let them float.

•Place a skeleton in a pool float or prop one up on the pool deck as a decoration.

•Another simple decoration is to purchase pumpkin Jack-o-lantern candy buckets and place colorful glow sticks in them. Use these to light the path to your party.

•For even more fun, get ahold of plastic see through rubber gloves and glow sticks. Put the glow stick in the glove and blow up the glove. Tie it off and then throw in the pool for a ghostly good time.

•Request that your guests come in costume with a water or swim theme such as mermaid, surfer, scuba diver, jellyfish, creature from the black lagoon, etc.

•Decorate with glowing eyes for a spooky effect. You need scissors, toilet paper rolls, tape, and glow sticks. Outline spooky eyes on the toilet paper roll, cut them out, snap a glow stick and put it inside the roll (tape helps keep it secure), and then place the eyes around the pool in bushes, vegetation, peeking out from a fence, etc.

No party is complete without games. Try these games with your party guests:

•Pumpkin Relay: Divide the players into two teams. Each team lines up at the end of the pool. The first two players much push a pumpkin across the pool with only their nose. Once they have reached the other side, another of their team members jumps in and pushes the pumpkin back to the other side. First team to finish wins.

•Monsters and Survivors: There are two teams on the opposite sides of the pool. One team is the monsters and the other team is the survivors. A leader calls out monsters or survivors. Whatever team is called must try and swim across the pool without being tagged by the other team. Tagged players switch teams. Untagged players can bring a team member back to their side. Game ends when everyone is on the same team.

•Costume contest: Give prizes for best costume, the costume showing the best theme, etc.
Turn on the spooky music to create ambience for your Halloween pool party. Try favorites such as Thriller, I put a spell on you, Monster Mash, Ghostbusters, and more. Check out this Halloween play list:

Finally, don’t forget the food! Swim ‘N Fun offers these fun ideas for ghoulishly delicious food:

•Mummy Meatballs:

•Severed Toes in a Bandage:

swimming pool with yard debris floating in it from a hurricane

Prime hurricane season is now!

While hurricane season runs from June 1st through November 30th, the most active time for hurricanes in Florida is from mid-August through the end of October. In fact, 90% of hurricanes occur after August 1st and September 10th is the peak day of hurricane season, statistically.

Hurricanes can wreak havoc on swimming pools! Swim ‘N Fun wants you to be prepared before a storm hits.

Prepare your pool by doing the following:

•Put away loose items such as patio tables, patio chairs, pool toys, grills, and patio umbrellas. Do not store these items in the pool as the pool chemicals could damage them or the items could leave rust stains after removal.
•Turn off the power to the pool. If there is a chance of flooding, wrap exposed electrical equipment in a waterproof cover and make sure it is tied tightly. You can also place sandbags near the equipment to help protect it from the elements.
•If you have a pool cover, leave it off.
•Balance pool chemicals (shock for extra boost).
•Don’t drain the pool. Draining the pool can cause the pool to pop out of the ground.
•Trim tree branches and shrubs that are near the pool. Clean up any debris that could end up in the pool.

How to clean up after the hurricane:

•Clean pool of all debris such as leaves, limbs, and mulch.
•Check the electrical equipment to your pool to make sure that it hasn’t been damaged.
•Turn power back on to re-start pump and filter.
•Make sure to re-set your pump times and circuit breakers if you had lost power during the storm.
•Brush and vacuum the pool to help remove any grime.
•Re-check the pool chemicals. If you are a current pool cleaning customer, our technicians will check your pool chemicals to make sure the water is balanced. Our 10-point water test checks for pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, free available chorine, total available chlorine, Cyanuric acid, total dissolved solids, metals, phosphates, and salt.
•Continue to monitor your pool to make sure that everything is working properly.

Swim ‘N Fun has been in business since 1986. We are family owned and operated. We are proud to serve our local community. At Swim ‘N Fun, we offer weekly pool maintenance and equipment repairs.

We look forward to serving you.

algae in a swimming pool

Summer is in full swing, how is your pool holding up?

Is it still blue in color? Does it have tints of green yet?

Who wants to swim in a green algae infested pool? Don’t worry, Swim ‘N Fun is here to help. Read on to learn about algae, where it comes from, and how to get rid of it.

What exactly is algae?

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, “algae are plants or plantlike organisms that are chiefly aquatic usually chlorophyll-containing nonvascular organisms.” Algae produces oxygen through photosynthesis and it grows quickly. This causes an issue with your pool as it will turn your pool green and can contaminate your pool water. Algae comes from soil and plant debris and its spores can blow into your pool. Higher temperatures and those daily Central Florida summer thunderstorms can also help introduce algae into your pool. Poor water circulation, lack of balance of pool chemicals, and a dirty filter can all contribute to algae. No matter how it gets there, algae is a nuisance.

How can you get rid of algae?

Proper maintenance of your pool including balanced chemicals and vacuuming your pool can help prevent algae growth. If your pool already is showing signs of that pesky green algae, then follow these steps:
•Vacuum your pool
•Brush the walls, floor, and steps of your pool
•Test the pool water and balance the chemicals
•Shock your pool
•Add algaecide
•Run your filter
•Test the pool water again
•Make sure to clean out your pool filter

We can help fine tune your pool water and combat algae.  Our weekly pool cleaning staff can recommend what chemicals and procedures you will need to do in order to eliminate algae.

Swim ‘N Fun is a full-service pool company. We offer weekly pool maintenance and equipment repairs.  For more information call us at 407-699-5588. We can help you take your pool from green to sparkling clean!

rain water hitting swimming pool

Did you know rain can upset the chemistry of your pool water?

Ah, summer time is almost here! While the weather is heating up, more and more people are spending time in their pools. About this time of year Central Florida starts prepping for its daily thunderstorms and heavy downpours.

Rain water has the potential to dilute a pool’s alkalinity level. This combined with a low pH in pools can really be a problem for your pool’s water. We recommend the moment you notice the color of your pool water starting to change, even just a tint of color change, give us a call.

After a storm has passed, follow these steps to keep your pool clean and healthy:

•Remove any debris that might have blown into the pool such as twigs and leaves with a net or vacuum
•Clean out the baskets, leaves and debris can clog the water flow
•Brush the sides of the pool and the steps
•Test the chemistry of the water
•Often times, pH levels have dropped so you may need to add chemicals to get your pH level back to normal
•Chlorine might need to be added along with shock

Swim ‘N Fun has a wide variety of pool chemicals to maintain your water quality. With the heat and humidity that comes with Florida, coupled with afternoon showers, your pool can quickly turn all shades of green.   We are a full-service pool company serving Central Florida since 1986 and offer weekly pool cleaning and pool repair.  Give us a call if you need help with your pool!  We look forward to helping you with all of your pool needs!

Pool Games

Turn Your Pool Toys Into Pool Games!

Swim ‘N Fun carries a wide array of pool toys such as inflatable rafts, inflatable tubes, inflatable ride-ons, dive toys, pool noodles, and beach balls. While pool toys are entertaining, you can have even more fun by utilizing your pool toys in pool games such as:

1. Raft Battle:
The players float around the pool on their rafts. The goal of the game is to push the other player off of his/her raft. Last player on the raft wins.

2. Jousting with Pool Noodles:
Each player sits atop a raft while holding a pool noodle. Then, each player tries to knock the other player off of his/her raft with the pool noodle (similar to jousting on a horse)

3. Catch While Riding a Pool Noodle:
Every player straddles a pool noodle. They then toss a beach ball back and forth. The goal of the game is stay on the noodle while catching and throwing the ball. Last person still on their noodle wins.

4. Beach Ball Race:
Each player has a beach ball. They must push the beach ball from one end of the pool to the other while keeping their hands on the beach ball (no throwing allowed). For even more fun, have the kids push the beach balls with their noses, no hands allowed.

5. Raft Relay:
Must have a minimum of two players to play but the more the merrier. You need 2 rafts or floats. Each player races on their raft/float from one side of the pool to the other and back. When they get back to their starting point, they tag the next player and that player takes the raft/float and races to the end and back. Play continues until one team finishes first.

6. Whack-a-Wet-Mole:
You need a pool noodle and a variety of inflatables. One player holds the pool noodle while the other players stand a few feet away from them (in the shallow end of the pool). Then, each player bobs up and down in the water while holding their inflatable as the player holding the pool noodle tries to whack them gently on the head. This is similar to the arcade game, “Whack-a-mole”. Last player that gets whacked wins.

7. Float Tag:
Each player has a float, raft, tube, or noodle. One person is “it”. The other players try to evade “it” all while dragging their own floatie through the water. The players try to get to safety (which is a designated safe raft/float) in order to stay safe. Last person tagged wins.

8. Beach Ball Squirt Race:
Each person has a beach ball and a water squirter. Players must move their beach ball from one side of the pool to the other just by using the water from their water squirter. No hands allowed. First player to reach the other side of the pool wins.

9. Tug-O-Noodle:
You need one pool noodle and at least 4 people. Divide the players into teams. Each team stands on one side with the pool noodle between them. Then, use the pool noodle like a rope and play tug-of-war.

10. Dive:
Divide the players into teams. Throw a variety of dive sticks into the pool. Each player then must dive in and retrieve their item from the bottom of the pool. The player then returns with their item to their team and tags the next player. This continues until one team has retrieved all of the dive sticks.

Pool Safety

2 children swimming wearing life jackets with parents in background

Summer is quickly approaching and backyard swimming pools will be open! Swim ‘N Fun wants you to enjoy your pool while also keeping children safe. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the leading cause for death in children between 1 and 4 years old is drowning.

Swim ‘N Fun offers these safety tips to help protect children:

•Always watch children near water including by pools and hot tubs
•Teach your child how to swim and know how to swim yourself
•Utilize the buddy system. No one should ever swim alone
•When there is a group of people such as a party or family get together, a water watcher should be assigned. The water watcher should completely focus on those swimming in the pool without distractions such as cell phones, alcohol, or conversations. All adults should take a turn.
•Never leave a child unattended in or near water
•Remove pool toys from the pool when you are finished with them so they are not a temptation for a child
•The only safe personal flotation device for a child that can’t swim, is a device that is approved by the US Coast Guard (a lifejacket). Do not rely on water wings, floaties, or pool noodles as flotation devices. These items are strictly pool toys
•Know CPR
•Always have a phone available
•Learn the signs of drowning

Do you know the signs of drowning?

•Drowning is silent
•A person drowning is vertical or bobbing in the water with the head going up and down
•Arms may be extended laterally
•The head may be low in the water with the mouth at water level
•The head can be tilted back with the mouth open
•Eyes may be closed, glassy, empty, or unable to focus
•Gasping or hyperventilating

With summer quickly approaching pool safety is vitally important. Swim ‘N Fun wants you and your family to enjoy your own pool or that of a friend or family member all while staying safe.

Swim ‘N Fun is a full-service pool company that has been serving Central Florida since 1986.  We pride ourselves in providing friendly customer service, and quality swimming pool maintenance and repair that you can count on.
